CHARLES TOWN, WV, April 13, 2020—American Public University System (APUS) today announced that its Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BS HIM) has received initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) in recognition of the program’s substantial compliance with the nationally-established CAHIIM Accreditation Standards.
CAHIIM, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, strives to provide the public with effective and consistent quality monitoring of health informatics and health information management programs through maintenance of accreditation processes. Program accreditation by CAHIIM means that a program has voluntarily undergone a rigorous review process and been determined to meet or exceed standards set by the Board of Directors and aligns with American Health Information Management Association entry-level curriculum competencies and knowledge clusters for bachelor’s programs.
The CAHIIM recognition further strengthens APUS’s multi-disciplinary BS HIM, which is designed to provide adult learners with the career-relevant knowledge and skills required to help them manage in a rapidly changing healthcare environment, according to Brian Freeland, dean of APUS’s School of Health Sciences.
“Health information management has been cited by The Bureau of Labor Statistics as one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations, increasing the demand for skilled professionals in data management, information policy, finance, information systems, and administrative and clinical environments,” said Freeland. “We are honored to have our program, and our outstanding faculty, by extension, recognized by the Commission for our commitment to continuous quality improvement in higher education.”
