American Public University System Introduces First Applied Doctoral Programs

Charles Town, W. Va., May 15, 2017 — American Public University System (APUS) today announced its first two applied doctoral programs in Strategic Intelligence and Global Security.  The announcement was made to American Military University (AMU) and American Public University (APU) graduates at the university’s annual commencement ceremonies on May 13.

The programs - designed to be offered in three annual cohorts beginning in January 2018 - meet the need for higher-level education and research combined with professional practice to equip students and faculty to dynamically contribute to the global security and intelligence dialogue, according to Dr. Mark Riccardi, dean, School of Security and Global Studies.

“Each of these new programs was vetted with our industry advisory council of leading practitioners in both the public and private sectors to help ensure optimum alignment with the rapidly-evolving demands of our nation’s most critical intelligence-related careers,” said Dr. Riccardi.  “We anticipate that they will be attractive to prospective students already working in associated military, government, corporate and/or non-profit roles as well as to our graduates holding a related master’s degree.”

“We are extremely proud of this milestone accomplishment, which validates our long-standing reputation for providing premiere intelligence education and furthers our ongoing commitment to enhance the body of knowledge for military, national security and public service professionals,” said APUS President, Dr. Karan Powell, who advanced the initiative in her prior role as APUS provost.  “I also want to commend Dr. Riccardi, Dr. Patricia Campbell, Dean of Graduate Studies, Research and Innovation, faculty, staff, and members of the board of trustees, whose collaborative efforts were instrumental in bringing these programs to fruition.”

APUS, founded as American Military University with a mission to educate those who serve, offers a comprehensive, career-relevant intelligence curriculum - from strategic intelligence analysis, collection, and management to interagency operations, counterintelligence, and homeland security - instructed by an accomplished faculty of industry scholar–practitioners.  A responsive learning support team and tailored resources such as online librarians with intelligence experience make the programs among the university’s most sought-after.
